Quick Review on Veterinary Pathology
TERMINOLOGY
Edema: is a condition of abnormally large fluid volume in the circulatory system or in tissues between the body's cells (interstitial spaces)
Embolism: An embolism is an obstruction in a blood vessel due to a blood clot or other foreign matter that gets stuck while traveling through the bloodstream. The plural of embolism is emboli
Erythrocytes
- Macrocytes: larger erythrocytes of normal shape
- Microcytes: Abnormally small erythrocytes
- Spherocytes: small, spherical erythrocytes that lack central pallor
- Polychromasia: Variation in cell staining (change to bluish gray) observed in erythrocytes stained with Romanowsky-type stains due to the presence of residual RNA.
- Poikilocytes: Abnormally shaped erythrocytes.
- Leptocytes: Thin erythrocytes with an increased amount of cell membrane relative to the total cell volume; thus they are folded over.
- Stomatocytes: A type of leptocyte that is bowl shaped when three dimensional
- Keratocytes: Known as horn cells or helmet cells, are erythrocytes that have one or more angular projections resembling horns that protrude from the cell surface.
- Schistocytes: Fragments of damaged erythrocytes that appear as crescents, triangles, or other irregular shapes
- Acanthocytes: Erythrocytes with several unevenly spaced, irregular projections or spicules that form secondary to an altered membrane lipid and cholesterol content
Haemorrhage: The escape of blood from a ruptured vessel
Hyperemia: Increased blood flow in a part of the body
Oncology: is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of tumors
Thrombosis: the formation or presence of a thrombus (a clot of coagulated blood attached at the site of its formation) in a blood vessel
