Introduction
Globally, there has been a constant increase in poultry production especially in developing nations where 75% of the expansion is taking place (FAO, 2013). In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the chicken has been the most extensively exploited in commercial poultry production and this remains a vital region where investment in poultry farming is immensely serving as source of income to entrepreneurs and subsistence role in backyard practice (Mbodi, 2014). Infectious diseases of viral origin such as Avian Influenza (AI), Newcastle Disease (ND), Infectious Bronchitis (IB), Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) [Gumboro Disease], Marek’s Disease and Litchi Heart Disease are identified as major constraints in the development of the poultry industry globally thereby causing huge economic losses to farmers (Abraham-Oyiguh et al., 2014; Wakawa et al., 2014; Balami et al., 2015; Mshelia et al., 2016). These economic losses range from degradation of birds’ value from mortality and culling to production drop, job losses and management cost (Kumar et al., 2008).
Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting poultry against harmful diseases, before they come into contact with them. It uses body’s natural defenses to build resistance to specific infections and makes their immune system stronger. Vaccines train the body’s immune system to create antibodies, just as it does when it’s exposed to a disease. However, because vaccines contain only killed or weakened forms of germs like viruses or bacteria, they do not cause the disease or put birds at risk of its complications. Most vaccines are given by different routes in avian species: oral, ocular, nasal, subcutaneous injection, intramuscular injection, spray, in-ovo etc. Vaccines reduce risks of getting a disease by working with the body’s natural defenses to build protection. When birds get a vaccine, their immune system responds. The vaccine is therefore a safe and clever way to produce an immune response in the body, without causing illness. Animals’ and birds’ immune systems are designed to remember. Once exposed to one or more doses of a vaccine, they typically remain protected against a disease for weeks, months or even a lifetime. This is what makes vaccines so effective. Rather than treating a disease after it occurs, vaccines prevent the birds in the first instance from getting sick and protects from potential huge economic losses.
The immune response of birds against different infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, coccidia) is different. The prevalence of different infectious diseases also differs in different geographical regions. Moreover, the schedule and pattern of vaccination followed in different parent stock (breeder flock) farm also differs as per the consultants’ advice and preference of breeder holders leading to different level of maternal derived antibodies (MDA) acting against different infectious agents. Poultry farmers and practicing veterinarians are always concerned about what could be the best possible vaccination program for the commercially reared birds in their area. This webinar focuses on enabling the poultry veterinarians to evaluate and ascertain themselves the best possible vaccination program for the commercial broilers in their area.
Objectives
The objective of this webinar is to train veterinarians and veterinary students about the various aspects of immunity and appropriate vaccination program in broiler chicken; birds immune response, maternal derived antibodies, body response to live and killed vaccines, probable science behind current Ranikhet outbreak, biosecurity etc. Beside, this webinar will explore the various aspects of major viral disease of commercial broiler prevalent in Nepal including ND, IBD, HPS and IB.
Keynote speakers
Our expert speaker will be Prof Dr Hom Bahadur Basner, PhD; Dean, FAVF, AFU a veterinary microbiologist and professor of a veterinary college with decades of experience in the poultry industry who will speak on “Possible science behind current ND outbreak in Nepal and biosecurity”. He will also deliver his talk on “Maximizing immunity of commercial poultry against IB and Litchi disease”.
We have also invited another veterinary microbiologist from India Dr Susim Mukul Ray, MVSc (Gold Medalist); Technical and Promotion Head, Zydus Animal Health with years of experience in the poultry industry who will speak on “Understanding immunity against Newcastle disease in broilers- Is broiler immunity fragile? He will also deliver his talk on “Optimizing immunity against Gumboro in poultry”.
Methodology
The training is webinar based and will be conducted using Zoom application through national and international speaker. The online training will be conducted by Vet Nepal, a global online vet service portal from Nepal in partnership with Nepal Veterinary Association – Gandaki Province and Poultry Consultancy & Diagnostic Lab, Dang. The talk program will be conducted for 2 days starting from 29th May, 2021 to 30th May, 2021. The webinar will be chaired by Dr Khagendra Raj Sapkota, Senior Livestock Development Officer, Nepal Livestock Breeding Office, DLS, Government of Nepal. The webinar will be coordinated by Dr Bibek Bandhu Regmi, Director MarComm, Nepal and Shiva Shrestha, Founder of Vet Nepal and moderated by Dr Prakash Adhikari, Director IT & Communication, Vet Nepal.
